HBO scored big numbers with its Liberace biopic.
“Behind The Candelabra,” which aired Sunday night with stars Michael Douglas (as Liberace) and Matt Damon, averaged 2.4 million viewers at 9 p.m. — HBO’s best numbers, for an original movie, since “Something The Lord Made” aired in May 2004 (to 2.6 million viewers).
The movie, directed by Steven Soderbergh, told of the secret love affair between the famous pianist and Scott Thorson (played by Damon).
By comparison, HBO’s movie about record producer Phil Spector (played by Al Pacino) snared only 755,000 viewers in its premiere in late March (it pulled in anoter 300,000 viewers in later viewings).
