HERE’S a look at how some non-news networks handled Sept. 11 coverage yesterday morning on Time Warner Cable’s digital tier.
Those channels that didn’t carry live coverage of anniversary tributes – at Ground Zero, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa. – offered 9/11 documentaries, New York-related movies or completely unrelated shows and films industry execs called “safe haven programming.”
Some cable channels didn’t even go on the air until late morning.
Off-air channels included The Arab Channel, which featured the world-famous photograph of firefighters raising an American flag at Ground Zero. Under the picture the screen bore the message – in English – “In memory of our heroes 9/11.”
Live coverage could be seen on the ShopNBC channel, which carried MSNBC’s feed – much like it did last year while the terrorist attacks unfolded.
On QVC though, it was business as usual – around 10 a.m. the network was selling jewelry, while PAX aired an infomercial.
TLC’s version of “safe haven programming” consisted of a documentary called “A Wedding Story.”
A&E and the History Channel shared the same feed, “Faces of 9/11,” that carried the names of the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks. Each name appeared for a brief moment against a black background for several hours.
In late morning, The Discovery Channel was airing a documentary about the Washington Monument, while the Discover Civilization channel carried the 9/11 documentary “Inside Flight 93.“
MTV aired its documentary about the effects of 9/11 on pop-culture.
