CLASSIC PHILLY GUMBO
SUMMERTIME, and the listening’s easy – especially this summer, when the New York Philharmonic lightens up with a series of eminently hummable “Summertime Classics.”
Catch Grammy-winning guitarist Sharon Isbin’s “Viva España” program of Rodrigo, Ravel, Chabrier and Falla tonight.
Still to come: waltz-worthy tunes from Weber, Dvorak, Milhaud and Borodin (the inspiration for the tunes in “Brigadoon”) on Saturday and Sunday, and an all-American program of Bernstein, Gershwin and other greats on July 3 and 4.
The folksy Canadian conductor Bramwell Tovey – whose last Philharmonic outing was in Central Park – directs, so expect lots of anecdotes and fun asides, even in staid Avery Fisher Hall.
