A daytime verison of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” has been bought by Ch. 2, which will pair it in the afternoons with another runaway game-show hit, “Weakest Link.”
It is an irony that syndicated versions of the biggest new game shows on TV right now should end up on Ch. 2, the CBS network’s flagship ststion.
The primetime version of both shows were made popular on – and are owned by – rival networks ABC and NBC.
ABC’s parent company, Disney, owns the rights to “Millionaire” and NBC owns “Link.”
But WABC and WNBC, which were offered first crack at the two daily versions of the shows, passed.
Ch. 2 trails Ch. 4 (which carries the high-rated “Judge Judy”) and Ch. 7 (which is the local home of “Oprah’) in the afternoons and was in much need of a ratings boost.
“Weakest Link” joins Ch. 2 in January; “Millionaire” bows in September 2002.
Although Ch. 2 doesn’t yet know where the shows will air, the most likely spot would be from 3 to 4 p.m., currently occupied by “ET” and “Inside Edition.”
Ch. 2 airs an early newscast at 4 p.m. opposite “Oprah” and “Judge Judy.”
No hosts have been named for either “Millionaire” or “Link,” although Regis Philbin, who hosts “Millionaire” in prime time, says he might be interested in hosting the daytime version.
