In this unsettling — and eventually just unpleasant — psychological thriller, loner Jim (Michael Cudlitz) is an overnight security guard whose hobby is visiting the murder sites of famous serial killers. His latest vacation takes him to a small California town known for a criminal (Pruitt Taylor Vince) whose “masterpiece,” as Jim puts it, was setting fire to a church with everyone locked inside.
Clearly dealing with his own deep-seated issues, Jim is befriended by a lonely local waitress (Melanie Griffith) who doesn’t see the rage bubbling underneath his sad-eyed exterior.
Director Suri Krishnamma capably depicts the darkness in Jim’s head with his shadowy surroundings, misanthropic inner monologue and increasingly frequent hallucinations, and Griffith’s vulnerable performance is a standout. But the film’s final third seems needlessly graphic.
