DOWNTOWN FEST IN A PICKLE
Pucker up for International Pickle Day.
Next Sunday marks the second year for the downtown festival, which drew 4,000 fans last September, despite rain and limited access due to the Sept. 11 attacks.
The free, family-friendly event presented by the New York Food Museum and the Lower East Side BID celebrates the old pickle district with multi-culti samples from kim chee to kosher dills. Local bars will whip up pickle cocktails, and demonstrations will detail how to make varieties from all over the world.
Pickle stories contributed by New Yorkers last year have been collected into “The Pickle Book,” for which advance orders will be taken, and live world-beat music will play throughout the day.
It’s Sunday Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Orchard Street between Houston and Stanton streets. Find more info at http://www.nyfoodmuseum.org.
SWEDE THING: Usher out summer Swedish-style at Aquavit’s Crayfish Week.
Tomorrow through Saturday chef Marcus Samuelsson will shell out the little bright-red crustaceans in many forms, from peel-and-eat and crayfish herring to foie gras ganache with marinated fig and crayfish ice cream.
A buffet in the upstairs cafe is prix fixe $20.02 at lunch and $32 for dinner. The Crayfish Week dinner tasting menu in the dining room costs $85.
Aquavit is at 54 W. 54th St. (between Fifth and Sixth avenues). For reservations, call (212) 307-7311.
STEAK OUT: The Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group is offering a $33.33 three-course “early autumn” dinner, now through Sept. 30.
In addition to the famous Midtown steak house, other New York eateries under the banner include Cite, Maloney & Porcelli, Manhattan Ocean Club, ONEc.p.s., Park Avenue Café and the Post House.
The menus are designed to include each spot’s popular items, such as Wollensky’s 12-ounce filet mignon and ONEc.p.s.’ pesto-crusted salmon with lobster bread pudding.
Smith & Wollensky is at 797 Third Ave., at 49th Street. Call (212) 753-1530.
