Julie Taymor, the acclaimed Tony-winning director of “The Lion King” and a creative force known for her spirited costumes, is at it again.

Her new play “The Green Bird” went into previews this week at the Cort Theater, and if these photos are any indication, the show is sure to make a splash for its masks and puppets.

The play is an 18th-century Italian fable and tells the story of a king who longs for his missing wife and of brother-and-sister twins who search for their true identities.

Taymor is on a roll. Her debut movie, “Titus,” received an Oscar nomination for its costumes, which were done by Taymor’s designer, Milena Canonero.

The sets for “The Green Bird” were done by Christine Jones and the costumes were by Constance Hoffman.

Taymor designed the puppets.

The play opens April 18.
