Doing the Tom
Most brilliant TV of the week: comic Dane Cook on Jimmy Kimmel, doing Tom Cruise on “Oprah” – abusing Kimmel’s furniture, pummeling the floor, and attempting to drag “Katie Holmes” out of the bathroom, off the toilet and on set. A must-view, at robomuffin.com.
The new face of pop
In the court of pop-culture opinion, it’s the bloggers who matter – and they almost unanimously love Norwegian pop star Annie, whose fizzy debut CD, “Anniemal,” will make a cheerful counterpoint to either your new White Stripes or Coldplay purchase.
“The Job”
Before depicting drunken, bigoted firefighters with love (and to great comic effect) on “Rescue Me,” Denis Leary was depicting drunken, bigoted cops in much the same way on this brilliant, shortlived 2003 series (now on DVD).
Shooting stars
Hitting the marrow of what is specifically annoying about specific celebrities are the artists at galleryoftheabsurd.com – featuring viciously funny portraits of P. Diddy as a mouth-breather (they’re right!) and David Beckham as the most vainglorious man on the planet (sad but true).
Cybill and Bruce
As memorable for its vanity shots of an aging Cybill Shepherd through layers of gauze and fuzzy lighting as for its cracking screwball dialogue, the great ’80s series “Moonlighting” finally gets a DVD release.
With “Friends” like these …
After a decade of cultural imperialism and unending press reports about yearly $20 million salaries, a “Friends” curse was inevitable – look no further than Lisa Kudrow’s new, poorly-reviewed HBO show “The Comeback.” And Jennifer Aniston. And, of course, “Joey.”
Geek etiquette
The breakout star of the new reality show “Beauty and the Geek” is the sweet, clueless Richard, utterly perplexed by the concept of “spooning”: “What are you going to do – feed me later?”
Dancing with the nobodies
The “stars” from “Dancing with the Stars”: we defy you to identify one of them by name.
Ringtone smackdowns
Furthering Coldplay’s own crisis about how uncool they are: a ringtone called “Crazy Frog Axel F.,” inspired by the theme song to 1984’s “Beverly Hills Cop,” beat the band’s new single for the No. 1 spot on this week’s British singles chart.
’80s makeovers
Shock of the week: the sight of reunited ’80s new wavers A Flock of Seagulls on NBC’s new battle-of-the-bands show. The singer’s old aerodynamic hair has been replaced by a long, greasy ponytail topped with a baseball cap. We ran so far away.
