1) ‘It’ veggies
It’s hard to tell if they’re actually tastier than regular tomatoes or if we’re just transfixed by all the swirly, pretty colors. Either way, now is prime time to get heirloom tomatoes, available at green markets all over the city.
2) Glam rags
Previously only available to Anna Nicole Smith, Amanda Lepore and friends, the Heatherette label brings its trashy glamour to the masses with a retail launch at Henri Bendel on Wednesday. Designers Richie Rich and Traver Raines will be on hand from 1 to 4 p.m. to assure you they are not selling out.
3) Double-dog
Now that South Korea has cracked canine cloning with Snuppy, fashioned from the DNA of a shockingly cute Afghan hound, it’s only a matter of months before savingsandclone.com, a kitty-copying company, can let you hatch a replacement for good old Spot.
4) Reznor’s edge
The opening credits and music of “Seven” were so ingenious, another collaboration between director
David Fincher and Nine Inch Nails singer Trent Reznor is long overdue. They team up on the new NIN video “Only,” which features the animated image of Reznor’s face as seen through a “pin-block” desk toy.
5) Prom pop
Just because you’re hot, underage and related to rock-industry royalty doesn’t mean your band has to suck, as L.A. pop band the Like prove on their acclaimed full-length debut, “Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking.” Judge for yourself when they play the Mercury Lounge on Tuesday.
6) Smoked screen
We’re not sure which is more delightful: Mary-Louise Parker playing a potdealing suburban mom, or Kevin Nealon playing a perma-stoned accountant. Fortunately, we don’t have to choose, as they’re both characters in Showtime’s new series “Weeds,” premiering tonight at 11.
7) Country punks
Like cicadas or Halley’s Comet, leathery honky-tonk band the Knitters comes around rarely but reliably. On Thursday at Irving Plaza, catch the side project of seminal punk band X, which ably covers songs by nouveau-country bands like the Old 97s and Whiskeytown.
8) A better mouse
Yes, the wait is finally over: Apple has released its first multi-button mouse, the Mighty Mouse, to thunderous applause from the tech-geek community. The rest of us just give it a mildly inquisitive glance. Retails for $49 at apple.com.
9) Blackout lit
As the two-year anniversary of the Big Blackout looms, Harlequin presents a tribute to the primary fringe benefit of Aug. 14, 2003: blackout sex. The Blaze novel series features characters who let loose for a single night of unbridled
– not to mention un-air-conditioned – passion.
10) The Razz Age
Sure, it’s an easy joke, but the execution of “I Love the 30s” is impeccable: C-list “celebrities” sit next to a bare light bulb and an old-fashioned mike stand, quipping about the Lindbergh baby and Babe Ruth’s called shot. At ilovethe30s.com.
