JASON Hagen sells guitars at Manny’s Music, has his own band, and has been giving guitar lessons and auditioning tips for 10 years. Here’s his advice about how to prepare for the Limp Bizkit guitarist auditions:
* Know Limp Bizkit’s music: Get the last studio CD, “Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water,” and learn the top 25 songs the group plays in concert. Learn to play all of them “dead on – everything note for note.”
* Learn the old stuff, too: Sometimes you can flow from the requested song into one of the old songs. That will show the band you know all the material.
* Don’t dress like Fred Durst: Have a decent, cool look that fits with the band, but don’t imitate anyone.
* Remember your pick: “It’s kind of a no-brainer, but if you go somewhere and you don’t have a pick, it’s like going to an interview and not having a pen.”
* Write a song in Limp Bizkit style: The band’s looking for originality. “Don’t play something that sounds like Rush or Metallica.”
* Be prepared for disappointment: With the number of people trying out across the country, getting the part will be “like winning the lottery.”
