IT’S A TIME CAPSULE
ISN’T THIS A TIME! ***
(three stars)
I’M not exactly a fan of folk music, but Jim Brown’s docu mentary “Isn’t This a Time!” had me singing along with the Weavers; Peter, Paul and Mary; Pete Seeger; Arlo Guthrie and other icons of the genre.
The occasion was a 2003 Carnegie Hall concert honoring Harold Leventhal, the producer who for more than 50 years presented annual folk get-togethers at the famed 57th Street venue.
The now-aged performers may look like sweet old grandparents, but they’ve lost none of their zest as they perform chestnuts like “Good Night Irene,” “Midnight Special” and “Wimoweh.”
White-haired Ronnie Gilbert of the Weavers – the group was blacklisted during the McCarthy years – is in especially fine voice.
Leventhal, who died two months ago, couldn’t have asked for a better memorial than “Isn’t This a Time!”
Running time: 90 minutes. Not rated (nothing objectional). At the Quad, 13th Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues.
