‘JEOPARDY!,’ meet “Survivor.”
“Jeopardy!,” the veteran quiz show hosted by Alex Trebek, is adding a new kind of video clue category that will feature a team of four correspondents called the Clue Crew.
The team will be sent to landmarks, historical sites and other locations around the world to record clues – which will then be incorporated into the popular game show.
But the search to staff the Clue Crew appears be taking a page from the “Survivor” rule book.
Clue Crew wannabes can mail in videotapes of themselves explaining why they should be picked to be on the Clue Crew.
The audition process is similar to “Survivor,” in which contestants routinely deluge the show’s producers with thousands of videotapes demonstrating why they should be part of the show.
“It seems to be the best way to at least make the first cut of submissions,” “Jeopardy!” executive producer Harry Friedman said, adding that more information about the tryouts is posted on the show’s Web site, Jeopardy.com.
Unlike the ‘Survivor’ tryouts, in which potential castaways donned coconut bikini-tops or filmed themselves running naked through the Bronx while throwing spears at cars, Friedman said he is expecting less over-the-top video from “Jeopardy!” fans.
“I suspect there’s a different kind of person who goes out to be on ‘Survivor,’ Friedman said. “We’re not looking for adventurers – we’re looking for people who are intelligent, exhibit a natural curiosity about things and are obviously articulate.”
The four winners will be on the show’s payroll for one year, Friedman said.
“I think we’ll get [tapes from] people who are currently news correspondents and recent graduates,” Friedman said.
