NBC is trying to shoot down any chance that “Today” show co-host Katie Couric might jump to “CBS Evening News.”

Talks have begun to extend Couric’s record-setting $16-million-a-year contract beyond 2006 when it is set to expire, according to TV Guide Online.

Her contract has 18 month to go.

CBS has reportedly been trying to lure her to replace anchorman Dan Rather, who has announced he will step down in March.

NBC chief Jeff Zucker said over the weekend that he expected Couric to remain at NBC for a long time.
