27 Dresses

Movie: **½ Extras: *

(Fox, $29.98)

If it weren’t for the charms of Katherine Heigl, “27 Dresses” would be yet another soggy lump of romantic dross. As it is, it’s still pretty slight, with lots of obsessing over the cookie-cutter nature of American matrimony and, of course, a single girl’s ultimate desire to be wedded off to a fair prince. While screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna put some bite into “The Devil Wears Prada,” here she’s about as sharp as a couplet of self-written vows. The extras don’t add much insight, or even a reason to check them out, except for a detailed look at the designs for all the horrid bridesmaids gowns Heigl wore to other girls’ weddings.

Bernard and Doris

Movie: ***½ Extras: ***

(HBO, $26.98)

This overlooked gem aired on HBO earlier this year and deserves attention from nonsubscribers. It’s the tale of tobacco heiress Doris Duke, played by a delightfully over-the-top Susan Sarandon, and her Irish butler, Bernard Lafferty, portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in one of his best roles. This imagining of their chaste, odd-couple romance is a wonder of human nature, betrayal and forgiveness. The extras include a look at the real-life relationship between the two.
