Mint juleps as nightcaps?

The idea of moving the venerable Kentucky Derby to prime time sometime in the future has been kicked around since Churchill Downs installed lights and began dabbling in night racing in 2009.

“We’ll never say never, but we’ve got a pretty good thing going right now with the way the day unfolds,” says the track’s president Kevin Flanery.

“It would be a wonderful broadcast,” says Mike Trager, a sports television consultant and former NBC Sports executive.

The race is traditionally run shortly after 6 p.m.
