IS America ready for cross-dressing RuPaul as . . . “The Tranny.”
UPN is financing a pilot for “The Tranny” as its answer to the Robin Williams movie “Mrs. Doubtfire,” in which Williams played an actor masquerading as a British nanny to keep a job.
In “The Tranny” – short for transvestite -RuPaul will play a nanny to three young kids.
Like Williams, RuPaul’s character is described as “a fledgling entertainer who takes a role as a nanny to make ends meet – and becomes the most down-to-earth character in a rather dysfunctional family.”
So far, RuPaul is the only one to be cast for the series.
Late winter is when all the networks commission pilots – just one episode – from which they can judge what they will put on the air next year.
Inside the business, it is often called the silly season – but “The Tranny” seems to be at the head of this year’s class.
“The Tranny” is being written and executive-produced by Mort Nathan, who worked on “The Golden Girls” and “Benson.”
Cross-dressing TV characters have a long history dating back to Milton Berle and Oscar-winner Tom Hanks on the ’80s sitcom “Bosom Buddies.”
