A thoroughly enjoyable about womanizing U.S. congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks), who, at the urging of a gorgeous, conservative Texas socialite (Julia Roberts), backs Afghan rebels against the Soviets in the 1980s with weapons and dough. Wilson is helped in his mission by his off-center pal, a rogue CIA agent (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Based on a true story.
HANNAH AND HER SISTERS (1986), Wednesday, 2 a.m., TCM
Life changes between two Thanksgivings for perfect mother and famous actress Hannah (Mia Farrow) and her two sisters, Lee (Barbara Hershey) the wife of a misogynistic painter (Max Von Sydow) and Holly (Dianne Wiest), a wanna-be actress and writer. Hannah’s world changes when her husband (Michael Caine) begins an affair with Lee, and her ex-husband (Woody Allen) starts a relationship with Holly. A Woody gem!
SICKO (2007), Thursday, 8:55 p.m. Showtime
Michael Moore’s very compelling documentary (or make that indictment) of America’s failed health care system. Moore travels around America as well as to Canada, England, and France to investigate their free universal care and how well (or it all works – or not. He goes so far as to take three 9/11 volunteers with respiratory problems to Cuba for treatment.
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935), Saturday, 2 a.m., AMC
What’s a mad scientist to do after he and his monster survive a fire that supposedly killed them? That’s the question author Mary Shelley (Elsa Lanchester) proposes in this fabulous, black-humored sequel to the great 1931 classic. Tragically, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) is forced to for build his monster (Boris Karloff) a crazy-haired monster-wife, (Lanchester again). The dialogue should be required reading for film students.
