Warren Beatty is Commie journo John Reed, caught up in the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. Diane Keaton is indy journo Louise Bryant who romances Reed while pathetically cheating with his leftie pal, Eugene O’Neill (Jack Nicholson). Epic but at threeplus hours, not every comrade’s cup o’ tea.

THE GAME (1997)

Michael Douglas is a billionaire with everything – and, of course, nothing. For his 48th birthday his brother (Sean Penn) gives him a membership in “a game,” which turns into a harrowing experience guaranteed to “provide whatever is lacking” in a person’s life. Right. Interesting but overblown.

RANCHO NOTORIOUS (1952)

Friday, 10 p.m., TCM

Fritz Lang’s wild Western about a man (Arthur Kennedy) out to avenge the murder and rape of his sweetheart which leads him to an hideout owned by a sexy chanteuse (Marlene Dietrich) well past her prime. Dark and dirty good fun.

SHREK 2 (2004)

Saturday, 8 p.m., HBO

Only a Pinko-Commie (see “Reds,” page 4) wouldn’t love this animated tearjerker! In this one, green love machine Shrek (Mike Myers) travels with Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) to meet the new in-laws who don’t know about the whole ogre thing. A perfect monster mash.
