Ricky Gervais was back as court jester at the 73rd annual Golden Globes — and the ceremony started off with a surprise, as Kate Winslet won for her role in the Aaron Sorkin biopic “Steve Jobs.”
“What an incredible year for women in film,” said Winslet, who beat out Jane Fonda for “Youth,” Jennifer Jason Leigh for “The Hateful Eight” and Helen Mirren for “Trumbo.”
As she accepted her trophy, she added she was “extremely surprised and overwhelmed.”
Gervais kept the humor topical, starting the show by skewering Sean Penn for his ill-advised interview with druglord El Chapo.
“I am going to do this monologue and then go into hiding,” Gervais said during the opening monologue. “Not even Sean Penn will find me.”
Maura Tierney took home the award for best supporting actress in a miniseries or TV movie, for her role in “The Affair.”
The actress was dumbstruck by the award and stumbled through her acceptance speech.
Gervais, the creator of BBC’s “The Office,” insisted that he would “play nice” but instead stuck to his usual acerbic jokes that mock the Hollywood elite sitting in the audience before him.
“What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, ” Gervais said of former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner.
“She didn’t do a lot for women drivers. But you can’t have everything, can you?” he added, referring to a fatal car accident Jenner was involved in last February.
Some of the stunners on the red carpet included Alicia Vikander, who sported an elegant white gown as she remained hopeful for her nomination for best supporting actress for the film “Ex Machina” and best actress in a drama for “The Danish Girl.”
The 40-year-old “Telenova” actress Eva Longoria was ready to present an award in her Georges Hobeika dress with floral embroidery on the hips.
“Blindspot” star Jaimie Alexander was wearing a long green and black gown but needed some adhesive to cover her tattoos.
“A little bit of eye makeup, this and that, and lots of tape,” Alexander told E!’s Giuliana Rancic. “I can’t go anywhere without adhesive.”
