LEAVE it to the Fall for Dance Festival to feature both an all-male hula troupe and a Thai classical dance with contemporary hip-hop sensibility. Eclecticism rules again when the fest returns to City Center on Sept. 17 for 10 days. With 28 companies and solo artists at just $10 a throw, this is dance’s most dizzying bargain.

This year’s edition also acts as a launching pad and preview for upcoming works. The Oregon Ballet Theater offers a duet from Christopher Wheeldon’s “Rush,” making a neat trailer for Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, opening its own annual City Center season Oct. 1

Look for previews from the San Francisco Ballet, which has its own City Center season Oct. 10 to 18; American Ballet Theater (Oct. 21 to Nov. 2) and looking way ahead, the Paul Taylor Dance Company (Feb. 25 to March 15).

MORE FALL ENTERTAINMENT PREVIEW STORIES

Apart from these postcards from City

Center residents, the festival roster is stuffed with American dance – from the very top tier

(the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in “Sounddance”) to companies moving to

the top, such as the Susan Farrell Ballet, which offers Balanchine’s rare “Pithoprakta.”

There’s also Indian

dance, Spanish dance, hip-hop, tap – name it, and if it moves to music, it’s probably here.
