STARZ is producing a prequel for its hit series, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.”

The untitled series will begin filming this summer in New Zealand and air next January, according to cable network Starz.

It will star “Spartacus” headliner Lucy Lawless, with co-star Andy Whitfield — who’s being treated for non-Hodgkins lymphoma — making a brief appearance.

Production on the show’s second season was halted after Whitfield received his diagnosis.

“Spartacus,” with its mix of raunch and death, was a hit on cable, averaging 1.2 million viewers, and the pressure was on to get new episodes on the air quickly.
