STARR REPORT
Jimmy: No big deal
Jimmy Kimmel says he doesn’t mind that ABC re newed his show only for an other year, taking “The Jimmy Kimmel Show” through January 2007.
“If we had huge ratings I’m sure it’s something we’d talk about, but it’s not like we’re the ‘Tonight Show’ over here,” Kimmel said yester day. “I think everyone here is OK with where we are.”
The one-year renewal is reminiscent of Conan O’Bri en’s early years at NBC, when the network would only give O’Brien’s “Late Night” short-term renewals.
“That’s just how the deal is set up as I signed it origi nally,” Kimmel said. “From their perspective it would be stupid – why would you commit to more than what you have to? I’m still under contract for another three years, one way or another.
“This time, to be honest, I was happy,” he said. “Last time they waited until about midnight of the deadline. I don’t know what they were thinking might happen.”
I asked Kimmel if there’s anything he’d like to change about “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” which is averaging around 1.5 million viewers. “I’m trying to be more handsome,” he said. “That’s my goal.”
