The Web site Filmmaking Frenzy (beta.filmmakingfrenzy.com) is a treasure trove of sweded films, thanks to its “Rewind Kindly” competition tied to the film. There are too many to choose from – and, as Gondry says, it’s not really about who’s best anyway – but we’ll single out a few that made us rewind and rewatch.
* “Labyrinth” – The actor playing David Bowie’s goblin king nails the singer’s inflections, spiky wig and trousers way too tight for a children’s movie.
* “Speed” – Notable for its “bus jumping the hole in the freeway” animated sequence, which features both E.T. and Mr. Bean. Also, actors managed to sneak onto an actual city bus to film; others run by holding cardboard scenery to make bus look as if it’s moving.
* “Top Gun” – Among many versions of the Tom Cruise classic, this one was made in the “Rushmore” style, aka, as literally as possible, with no winking at the camera. That said, it’s a little jarring that Kelly McGillis’ character is played by a dude.
* “Big” – Re-enacted with love by actors who have obviously watched the original a million times. Uses budget-friendly technique of making adult actors walk on their knees in order to portray young Josh and friend.
* “The Shining” – Improves on original by having Scatman Crothers’ character (played by very white guy in a bald cap) actually scat when he speaks.
