WHAT’S New York smell like? Forget rolling around on the floor of Penn Station, dousing yourself in street vendor coffee and then marinating in a steam vent. New York, or at least the Upper West Side, smells like vanilla, amber and rose, according to perfume maker Bond No. 9.
“West Side” perfume is one of the countless products that – to various degrees of believability – try to capture the spirit of New York in a bottle, lipstick or dress. Try hard enough, and you can “wear” the city head to toe.
“I think New York is the greatest, most energetic place in the world, and it conjures up so much inspiration. Your creative juices just start flowing here,” says makeup artist Mally Roncal.
“There’s not one thing about New York that’s ordinary, boring or tiresome, and we love to be inspired by our city.” But can any product really capture our city? We gave these New York items the test to see how well they reflected our metropolis.
MAC LIPSTICK IN NEW YORK APPLE
Price: $14
One of MAC’s original lipstick shades, it hit counters in 1988. “When you think of New York, you think of sophisticated, sexy, mysterious and confident. And then there’s this ballsy attitude, too,” says Valerie MacKenzie, executive director for product development for MAC cosmetics. “Any really bold red is New York to us – the color of the perfect apple.”
