Not every bear has its own day. But not every bear is Winnie-the-Pooh.

A.A. Milne’s first collection of stories — inspired by his son Christopher Robin’s teddy bear from Harrods — was published with iconic illustrations by E.H. Shepard in 1926. And more than 93 years later, his enduring fanbase is celebrating Winnie-the-Pooh Day around the globe.

Not-so-tasty trivia: Winnie was named after a real Canadian black bear at London Zoo, but the real-life Pooh was so popular with visitors (including Christopher) that she ended up with gum disease thanks to all the honey fans fed her.

Pooh’s pals Kanga, Roo, Tigger and Eeyore also were inspired by Christopher’s toy box — but Owl and Rabbit were named after real animals on the Milnes’ family Cotchford Farm in Sussex, England.

More torrid trivia: The Cotchford estate was later purchased by doomed Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones, who was found floating dead in the farm’s swimming pool in 1969.
