Party-pooping seagulls are killing the swimming season at Kingsborough Community College beach.
Tests show the water along the beach contains high amounts of enterococci bacteria, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory illnesses and infections — and has been traced to seagull poop.
Getty ImagesThat means the beach’s users — Kingsborough students, employees and people granted special permits — will probably want to swim elsewhere this July 4th weekend and maybe for the rest of the summer.
The city Health Department identified the problem with the gulls. “Kingsborough Community College has been informed, and it is taking remedial measures to try to reduce the number of birds on the beach,” it said.
The Brooklyn college has yet to say what the “remedial measures” are. It’s unclear when the beach will be all clear for swimming.
The beach was placed under advisory — meaning swimming and bathing isn’t recommended — from June 15 to June 21. Tests conducted the week ending June 18 showed the enterococci contamination level was nearly six times the recommended limit from the Health Department.
