Drop the 1973 spiel
By MARC BERMAN
Isiah, when you meet with Donnie Walsh today, tomorrow, Saturday, whenever, I would drop the 1973 stuff when explaining your abysmal four-year record.
Thomas has made the point before but he made it distastefully last night in talking about the âunique problemsââ in trying to win in New York, demonstrated by the Knicks not having won the title since 1973.
âYou havenât been proud here since 1973,ââ Thomas said. âThatâs a fact…You havenât won here since 1973.ââ
âYouââ apparently meant New Yorkers. Isiah is far from that â Chicago-bred, Piston-trained.
Forget the Yankees and their record number of world championships. Forget the Giants winning it all a couple of months ago.
This is a fact, Isiah. Walsh will be turned off if you repeat that theme to him. Walshâs Pacers never won it all, which by Isiah logic means Walsh has never made the Pacers fans âproudââ of that franchise in Donnieâs 24 years there.
The 1990âs was a very âproudââ time for the Knick franchise and often Patrick Ewingâs Knicks battled Walshâs Pacers in wonderful playoff battles. Two days ago, Isiah was treated like royalty at The Palace when they celebrated the franchiseâs 50th anniversary. Isiah was probably still stuck in that moment last night, as the face of two championships.
Those two Pistonsâ titles mean nothing here, Isiah. Nothing. You are a smart guy. Play to your audience like you did in your rousing speech in Detroit. Walsh doesnât want to hear about 1973. Walsh wants to know how you destroyed his hometown team and made fans pang for the 1990âs when they were proud and not embarrassed to be Knick fans.
