Dwight Howard’s already bad season appears to be getting worse.

The Washington Wizards’ big man has had recurring trouble with a gluteal injury this season and surgery was recommended by a nerve specialist, according to ESPN.

Howard has missed 12 of 21 games for the Wizards this season, averaging 12.8 points and 9.2 rebounds in the nine games he has played in as he recovers from an aggravated piriformis muscle injury after signing a two-year, $11 million deal over the summer.

The 32-year-old center, who has dealt with some off-the-court drama this season as well, has battled with health problems throughout his career after being the top pick in the 2004 NBA Draft.

Surgery will cause him to miss a significant chunk of the 2018-19 regular season, another blow to an 8-13 Washington team that’s been dealing with issues aplenty. Management is reportedly open to tearing everything down with the dysfunctional roster, which has several incidents of practice fighting between players and coaches.
