LONDON – It’s the obvious next move with Knicks president Phil Jackson’s sole focus now on creating even more cap room for 2015 and 2016 free agency: Starting point guard Jose Calderon has two years left on his contract after this one, starting at a substantial $7.4 million in 2015-16.
With the Knicks’ record at 5-35 and Calderon underachieving on both ends in his first season in orange-and-blue, Calderon sees the writing on the wall. An NBA source told The Post that Jackson prefers not to give up on Calderon this soon, hoping to see him play better.
“It can happen,’’ Calderon acknowledged at O2 Arena after Knicks practice Wednesday. “Why would you be surprised? They’re changing the staff. I don’t know what’s on their minds. If the opportunity comes, why not? It’s a business. They have a plan and really want that cap space.’’
Jackson already dumped J.R. Smith for $6.2 million in extra space. But Calderon hasn’t been told he’s not part of their future, which is why Jackson got him.
“I came here thinking I was part of it,’’ Calderon said. “I still think I am. They’ve said nothing different.’’
