A New Jersey congressman is asking Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to intervene to void a deal that would put the name of a financial services company on the proposed Nets basketball arena in Brooklyn. Rep. Bill Pascrell says the naming rights deal with Barclays Capital is inappropriate because its parent, London-based Barclays PLC, has received more than $8 billion in taxpayer bailout money through payments from troubled insurer AIG.

Barclays Capital plans to spend $400 million over 20 years to put its name on the Atlantic Yards arena.

In a letter Monday, Pascrell, a Democrat from Paterson, told Geithner he believes any further payments of taxpayer money to financial firms should be contingent on cancellation of any sports naming rights deals.
