Lob City is long over, but the Clippers still have one dunking freak.
Clippers giant Boban Marjanovic created his own highlight during Los Angeles’ season-opening 107-98 loss Wednesday night to the Nuggets. Marjanovic, a career journeyman, was the Clippers’ most productive bench option, dropping 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds in just 18 minutes.
Part of Marjanovic’s successful night stemmed from the Nuggets having no one to guard him. The 7-foot-3 Serbian provided multiple limited-effort dunks on the night, none more powerful than his one-handed slam that broke the rim at the Staples Center.
In the fourth quarter, Marjanovic caught a pass in the lane from guard Patrick Beverley before throwing down an effortless one-handed dunk.
Emphasis on effortless: Marjanovic’s wingspan reaches nearly 8 feet, which means he barely had to leave his feet to make the basket.
After the slam, Marjanovic held onto the rim for a few seconds, staring in the crowd. Those seconds wound up breaking the rim and caused officials to make a midgame alteration at a timeout.
There’s hasn’t been much for Clippers fans to look forward to since Blake Griffin was traded to the Pistons last season, but Clippers coach Doc Rivers is ready to see more from Marjanovic after his colossal night.
“He’s going to play, he’s going to play every night, and on the nights he plays well, he’s going to keep playing,” Rivers said of Marjanovic. “We had him [in] a little too long there. They started adjusting to him on the other end and I thought they hurt us, but overall, he was sensational.”
