Landry Fields is going back to his native California as part of All-Star Weekend. The Knicks’ impressive rookie yesterday was named as a participant in the Rookie-Sophomore game at Staples Center.
Fields will become the first Knicks rookie to play in the game since Channing Frye and Nate Robinson in 2006. David Lee, Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari all played, but as sophomores.
“Definitely looking forward to it. It’s something that I really couldn’t even envision myself, if you’re talking at this time last year,” Fields said. “High honor for me. Definitely blessed.”
Fields, who hails from Long Beach, Calif., said he plans to have friends and family in attendance, though he admitted, “I don’t know what the ticket situation is like yet.”
He’ll also have teammate Amar’e Stoudemire as an assistant coach for the Rookie team. Carmelo Anthony will be an assistant for the Sophomores.

Team president Donnie Walsh
declined to answer a question yesterday about hiring former Nuggets general manager Mark Warkentien
as a consultant. The deal is not official yet.
“I don’t talk about that,” Walsh said. “Don’t even ask me the question.”
