Even after gaining Andrea Bargnani, the Knicks still want to add big-man depth and were ready to make an offer to Westchester product Elton Brand, according to a source.

The Knicks, who still want to sign a point guard and small forward, may have to split up their $3.18M mini-midlevel exception and try to sign two players. They can use the veteran minimum of $1.4M for another free agent or two.

The Knicks have mainted dialogue the last two days with Brand’s agent David Falk, who once represented Patrick Ewing.

It is believed Brand is seeking more than the vet minimum and though he is intrigued by the Knicks, returning to Dallas is a strong possibility. Sunday’s Post branded Brand as one of the Knicks top three free-agent targets and the Bargnani deal has apparently not changed their interest level. Brand can play PF and center as he’s a traditional low-post player and solid rebounder.

Brand averaged 7.2 points and 6 rebounds in 21.2 minutes per game with Dallas. The Knicks realize Amar’e Stoudemire will be on a minutes restriction next season – possibly as low as 20 a game.
