Apparently, this town is big enough for two NBA Latvians. Especially with only one expected to be healthy opening night.
And that one should be Nets second-round draft pick — No. 40 overall — Rodions Kurucs, who finalized a four-year deal worth about $7 million with his NBA team Monday. Kurucs, a 6-foot-9 forward from Cesis, Latvia, gets three years guaranteed with the fourth year a team option, according to his agent, Arturs Kalnitis. The Nets dream Kurucs will provide anything resembling the impact fellow Latvian, the currently injured Kristaps Porzingis, has had on the Knicks.
While the Nets officially welcomed a new player to Brooklyn, they said goodbye to another, as Dante Cunningham accepted a one-year free-agent deal with the Spurs, sources confirmed. Cunningham came to the Nets, who also got a $1.8 million trade exception, from New Orleans in a Feb. 8 trade for Rashad Vaughn.
Kurucs played the last three seasons for FC Barcelona II of Spanish LEB Gold, averaging 10.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 20.8 minutes in 2017-18. He also played with FC Barcelona in both ACB and Euroleague competition, as well as teams in his native Latvia.
