The 76ers don’t sound ready to unveil the mask, as much as its owner is itching to put it to use.
Philadelphia ruled All-Star center Joel Embiid doubtful for Game 3 against the Heat on Thursday night, as he continues to recover from an orbital bone fracture sustained during an on-court collision in late March. Embiid’s absence was felt in the 76ers’ Game 2 113-103 loss Monday night, which evened the first-round series at one win apiece and brought their 17-game win streak, stretching back to March 13, to an end.
Embiid, who is with the team in Miami and has been sporting a protective facial mask in warmups, won’t be satisfied with the doctor’s orders.
“F–king sick and tired of being babied,” he wrote on Instagram after Game 2 in a since-deleted post.
This season Embiid finally had the chance to show why the 76ers gambled on him with the No. 3 pick in 2014, exploding for a double-double per game and his first All-Star Game selection since spending his first three seasons hampered by injuries. The 24-year-old can’t bear to watch another season go by without a taste of the playoffs, which the 76ers made for the first time in six years.
Embiid might even have the coach wishing he were the team doctor.
“You need Joel Embiid,” Sixers coach Brett Brown said Monday after the loss.
