Here are five Jets to watch when training camp begins Wednesday:
Geno Smith
Smith has a great chance, with Ryan Fitzpatrick unsigned, to prove to the coaches and front office he is capable of leading this football team. The longer Fitzpatrick’s absence goes, the more the organization will try to convince themselves Smith is the man for the job. He can help them along by showing a command of the offense and making good decisions. Last year, he started off strong in camp before the locker-room punch ended his preseason. This year, he needs to stay on the field.
Matt Forte
It is hard to get a read on running backs during training camp because there is very little tackling, but Forte was the Jets’ biggest free-agent acquisition this offseason. The question with Forte is how much tread does he have left on the tire. At 30 years old, Forte has hit the magic number for running backs where careers usually decline. One thing to watch is how the Jets use him. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey could get creative with formations and use Forte, who had 102 catches for the Bears in 2014, split out.
Lorenzo Mauldin
No position on the Jets is more of a wild card than outside linebacker (yes, even more than quarterback). Mauldin is the favorite to land one of the two spots. The 2015 third-round pick played sparingly as a rookie but still had four sacks. Now, coach Todd Bowles wants to see if Mauldin can make the leap into being an every-down linebacker. He has pass-rushing skills, but how he fares against the run and in coverage will determine how big his role is this year.
Ryan Clady
When D’Brickashaw Ferguson retired in April, the Jets quickly made a trade for Clady with the Broncos. Now, they have to see exactly what they got. Clady has been a very good player when he has been healthy, but he missed the entire 2015 season (torn ACL) and most of the 2013 season (Lisfranc). The good news for the Jets is, when he was healthy in 2014 he made the Pro Bowl. The Jets may be cautious with Clady early in training camp and limit his reps, but at some point they have to let him play.
Darron Lee
The first-round pick always is under the microscope in training camp. Lee, the Jets’ top pick this year, arrived with question marks of how he would fare at inside linebacker. There is no doubting his speed, but the 232-pounder could face some difficulty against the run. The Jets plan on using him in a limited role initially — in just sub packages. Can he play his way into a bigger role? The transition to the NFL always is tough for rookies. Lee’s development will be watched closely.
