The 2020 Jets took the next step toward the season Monday, beginning their virtual offseason program.
In normal years, this would be the day players would return to Florham Park and the team would begin its spring program. This year is not close to normal for anyone, including the Jets.
The team began Monday with positional meetings conducted virtually on Microsoft Teams. Coach Adam Gase said the team would have two hours of meetings a day for four days a week. He said he plans on being heavily involved in the meetings.
“I’m going to be very hands-on in this, whether it be meeting with certain positions — quarterbacks, any of the offensive positions,” Gase said. “The best thing about this program is I can jump in and out of a lot of different meetings. The video stuff that we’re able to do, it’s pretty cool how we’re able to share our screen and watch film of players and be able to diagram and talk through some stuff. It’s a unique way that we’re doing things but I think it’s going to be very beneficial for us.”
The offseason program is voluntary. Gase said they would stagger the meetings for players who are in different time zones. After two weeks of position-groups meeting primarily, Gase said bigger groups would begin to have meetings. Gase also wants to wait to address the whole team for two weeks in order to give guys time to get used to the technology and work out all the bugs.
Adam GaseBill Kostroun“When we get going, [my message is] going to be about how we can move forward with everything that’s going on and the unknown going forward, how we can stay focused on what we’re doing and find ways to get better throughout this whole process,” Gase said.
Gase said players are working out on their own and he feels pretty good that his players are doing what they are supposed to do to prepare physically.
Gase said everyone was ready to get going.
“I feel like the players are anxious to get going on something,” Gase said. “There’s not a lot of contact with people outside of FaceTime. I think this is a good opportunity for guys to actually see each other on these Microsoft Teams meetings we’re having where you can see your teammates, you can interact, have discussions. I think guys are excited to be a part of that.”
