Here are five players to watch as the Giants open training camp:
Eli Manning
Yup, he’s here. Normally, Manning would not be included in a list of players to keep an eye on during the summer. This is a new offense, a new coaching staff and, at 37 years old, a new lease on Eli’s NFL life. Manning was trending downward for several years, and the front office is trying to reverse that spiral, supplying the veteran quarterback with the tools he needs to succeed. The grind is again underway for Eli, learning a new system as he tries to shake off a horrid 2017 season.
Odell Beckham Jr.
Odell Beckham Jr.Anthony J. CausiHe said he will report on time, and new coach Pat Shurmur has said the star receiver is close to getting full medical clearance. So, away we go. How does Beckham’s surgically repaired left ankle look once the pads come on and there is jostling and some physical contact? Does he hold back at all, eyeing a contract extension? Usually, Beckham is one of the most competitive and spirited participants in these summer practices, but the Giants will remain cautious with their most lethal offensive weapon.
Lorenzo Carter
The rookie third-round pick from Georgia is not penciled in as a starter but the plan is to get him on the field early and often, as long as he is a quick-study and grasps the defense. This roster is not exactly teeming with gifted pass-rushers, and Carter can be that sort of impact player at outside linebacker — long-armed and blessed with power and speed. Watch No. 59 go at it in his first NFL camp.
Ereck Flowers
Ereck FlowersCharles Wenzelberg/New York PostLike it or not, he’s been kept around by the new regime and placed in a new spot, shifting over to right tackle after three seasons toiling on the left side. The footwork and hand placement Flowers struggled with at left tackle now gets reversed — not an easy transition. He is entering the final year on his contract and, most likely, his final camp with the Giants. There is not any proven depth behind him — perhaps Chad Wheeler makes a run at the job — and it appears Flowers will have to truly regress to lose his hold on a starting spot.
Saquon Barkley
You really think the stud rookie running back would not be mentioned in any “Players to Watch’’ list? We dare you to take your eyes off him. It will be fascinating to see the varied ways Shurmur gets the ball in Barkley’s hands, and it will be fun to track how many times Barkley drops a pass. If you are wont to bet on this, take the under. And when the Giants are working in shorts, take a look at those tree trunks Saquon calls thighs.
