It was somehow even worse than it looked.

According to an ESPN report, Bears tight end Zach Miller required urgent surgery Sunday night to repair damage to his arteries that could have cost him his left leg.

Miller suffered a dislocated knee while attempting to make a touchdown catch that was later overturned in the Bears’ 20-12 loss to the Saints in New Orleans. A source told ESPN that the injury is “more significant” than a regular dislocation and surgeons were grafting tissue from the artery in his right leg to repair the damaged one.

The Bears labeled the surgery a success later Monday and said Miller was undergoing an MRI exam to further evaluate.

The gruesome injury likely will end the 33-year-old’s career, but the concern was much greater than that.
