If social media’s purpose is to connect people, it worked for the Steelers and Bills.
And failed miserably for the Jets, whose fans might want to stay off Twitter for a while.
As Gang Green was in the midst of a heartbreaking fall to Buffalo on Sunday, which would push them out of the playoff picture when the Steelers knocked off the Browns, the two winning parties exchanged a few tweets, thanking and encouraging the other.
First, it was a foreboding tweet for the Jets, as the Bills’ account tipped off the Steelers that an upset may be afoot. As Pittsburgh pulled away from Cleveland, the team was well aware a playoff spot was nearly in its grasp.
Then came the final blow, a third Ryan Fitzpatrick interception, and the Steelers could taste that AFC No. 6 seed. Channeling Jim and Darryl from “The Office,” the two offered a virtual fistbump, doubling as a face slap to the Jets.
As if Rex Ryan wasn’t going to be loud enough.
