Herman Edwards said yesterday that Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, who was involved in an incident in which he allegedly assaulted a woman, will be deactivated for Sunday’s game against the Jets.

That means Jamaal Charles will start. Johnson, who was deactivated last week, too, leads the Chiefs with 417 rushing yards. He also has a 4.5-yards per carry average and three touchdowns. Charles has 115 yards, a 4.8-yard average and no touchdowns.

“It’s the best thing for the team,” Edwards said.

Edwards also said the Chiefs put QB Damon Huard on injured reserve yesterday, ending his season with right thumb ligament injury. Brodie Croyle, the team’s original starter, was lost for the season last week with a knee injury.

That means third stringer Tyler Thigpen is the starter until further notice.

WR Laveranues Coles (thigh, head), TE Bubba Franks (hip) and RT Damien Woody (calf) didn’t participate full in practice yesterday. WR Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder), TE Chris Baker (back), RG Brandon Moore (foot) and safety Eric Smith (head) were limited.

Brett Favre answered the speculation that his right shoulder has been ailing him after taking some big the last couple games.

“I’m a little sore today, but that’s been two days (since the game),” Favre said. “But I can play today.”

Favre, too, said the report last week that he phoned Dallas QB Tony Romo to offer encouragement, was incorrect, that Romo called him.
