“Character issues” is a fleeting phrase when it comes to the draft — one that tends to change in both meaning and significance depending on who, what, when, where and why.

Cardinals general manager Steve Keim, for example, said after the draft that the team paid special attention to character this year. And while the Cardinals were aware of an arrest of Texas A&M star receiver Christian Kirk, their second-round pick, they still drafted him. The cloud is now lifted around that arrest.

According to a police report obtained by TMZ, Kirk was booked on Feb. 3 at golf’s Phoenix Open for criminal damage to a car. He and friends allegedly were throwing rocks at cars in a parking lot. A window was broken, and Scottsdale police told the Arizona Republic “the suspects were intoxicated.”

Police also suspected cocaine.

“I further noticed the grinding movement of his jaw and continued blank stare,” the arresting officer said, per TMZ. “These are common signs of an individual high on stimulants, such as cocaine.”

After the draft, Arizona said it knew about a hazy arrest.

“We spoke with Christian about it at length and also looked into it independently,” the Cardinals said in a statement. “Our understanding is that the process will be resolved in the near future but while it remains an active legal matter, we won’t comment further.”

Kirk recently attended the team’s rookie minicamp and is expected to be at OTAs starting Tuesday.
