Heads are starting to roll in Dallas in a cutthroat way.
After the Cowboys lost their third straight game on Thursday to make Jason Garrett’s seat even hotter, the team announced Monday it cut kicker Brett Maher, making him the first scapegoat of a season that has fallen well short of expectations. Dallas signed Kai Forbath as Maher’s replacement.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Maher visited sick children at a hospital Monday wearing his Cowboys jersey before getting on a bus with teammates to the team’s practice facility, where he was promptly released.
Maher, 30, missed a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter of Thursday night’s 31-24 loss in Chicago that would’ve tied the game at 10-10. The Bears took over at their own 32 and scored a touchdown right before halftime to take a 17-7 lead into the break. That followed an 0-for-2 kicking performance in a Thanksgiving home loss to the Bills. Maher has converted just 20 of 30 field-goal attempts this season.
Forbath, 32, has appeared in one game this season, converting a 23-yard field goal for the Patriots in Week 13 while missing one of two extra-point tries. Forbath was filling in for Nick Folk, who had an appendicitis.
The Cowboys’ messaging regarding their kicking issues — among other things — had been mixed lately. At one point COO Stephen Jones said the team was sticking with Maher, but the team worked out kickers after the Bills loss.
Somehow, the Cowboys are still atop the NFC East at 6-7 ahead of the 5-7 Eagles’ clash with the Giants Monday night. But at this point, it appears there’s little Garrett can do to save his job other than lead Dallas on a deep playoff run, according to NFL Network. Jerry Jones clearly is unhappy as he cursed out 105.3 FM radio hosts on Friday during his weekly appearance.
The kicking change might just be the beginning of big changes for the Cowboys.
