After an uplifting, back-in-the-hunt victory in Atlanta on Sunday, Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup got devastating news.
The Cowboys’ locker room was somber, owner Jerry Jones told reporters, after Gallup’s sister informed him that their brother had died of apparent suicide over the weekend, according to a 247 Sports report. The rookie, third-round pick from Colorado State is the youngest of eight children and one of six who was adopted, according to The Coloradoan.
The game against the Falcons was a homecoming for Gallup, who caught a pass for 10 yards in the win. He was born in Atlanta and grew up in Monroe, Ga., and told the Dallas Morning News that he was excited to have so many friends and family at the game.
“I never got to play in the dome like the other high schools did play in the championship. It’s exciting,” Gallup said entering the game. “I only have to get three tickets. Everybody else said they’ll just get their own tickets. That’s fine with me.”
The Cowboys have handled the situation quietly, telling reporters there was a tragedy connected to one of the players.
