Danny Amendola shouldn’t be looking for a tribute video in his return to Foxborough.
For the second time since leaving the Patriots, the veteran wide receiver took a bit of a swipe at coach Bill Belichick, while this time praising his new coach, Dolphins head man Adam Gase, in comparison.
“Coach Gase is one of the guys, one of the boys, and you want to fight hard for your boys. Back in New England, it’s almost like you’ve got a principal, the principal’s office and s–t like that,” he said on Barstool Sports’ “Comeback Szn” podcast.
Amendola has not criticized the skills or résumé of his former coach, whom he’s also called “the greatest coach of all time.” But the relationship dynamic between the wide receiver and the disciplinarian was not strong — a critique several, typically ex-Patriots, have launched at Belichick.
“It’s refreshing to have that kind of relationship with a coach, something I haven’t had in a long time,” Amendola said about Gase. “I FaceTimed coach Gase just to bulls–t with him, just to talk to him. I was talking to his kids. I have a relationship with him that’s real unique, something I haven’t had in a while.”
Amendola was with New England from 2013-17, winning two Super Bowls in the span.
Soon after he left for Miami in free agency in April, Amendola took a more aggressive dig, saying Belichick is an “a–hole sometimes.”
