The Houston Texans are winless through four games, but they’ve apparently decided against seeing if Earl Thomas can help a defense that has allowed the fifth-most points in the NFL because their players didn’t want him around.

The seven-time Pro Bowl safety appeared on the verge of signing with the Texans last week, but CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora cited sources saying the Texans “opted not to” sign the free agent after “numerous Texans players expressed their displeasure about bringing Thomas into their locker room…ultimately convincing coach/general manager Bill O’Brien to back off.”

The 31-year-old Thomas had his contract terminated by the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 23 for “personal conduct that has adversely affected the team,” two days after he got in a practice scuffle with teammate Chuck Clark.

The former Seattle Seahawks star also reportedly had been fined repeatedly during training camp for being late to team meetings, including one time this summer when he claimed he was tardy because he was getting his car washed.

La Canfora reported the Ravens’ leadership council “strongly urged coach John Harbaugh and team officials to release Thomas after he threw a punch” at Clark.

The 0-4 Texans have allowed averages of 31.5 points and 393 yards per game through their four losses entering their currently scheduled Week 5 game at Tennessee.
