This might be a surprise to you all… but the Jets lost to the Chiefs on Sunday. Shocking, right? The Jets are now 0-8 and it’s hard to see a win for a team that has been getting blown out every game. Outside of Week 7 against the Bills, the Jets have not been competitive all season. While the team has been tough to watch, the “Gang’s All Here” podcast finds new ways to keep you entertained twice a week. On the latest episode, Brian Costello and I are joined by Mike Westhoff for an incredibly candid interview with a look back to when the Jets made the playoffs six times in 10 years during his time there.

Coz and I open up the show getting into the 35-9 loss in Kansas City. The game seemed over as soon as it started. Patrick Mahomes was remarkable, throwing for five touchdowns, one more passing TD than the Jets have had all season. The Jets were able to contain the run game, but Mahomes was just so good and got to sit the final 10 minutes as the Chiefs coasted to a win and a cover of the 20-point spread. We also get into the Jets decision to trade Avery Williamson Sunday night to the Steelers for a fifth-round pick. The now ex-Jets linebacker goes from 0-8 to 7-0 and has a chance to win a Super Bowl. Coz gets into him always being a great guy with the media and Jets fans having to see a bunch of former Jets playing in the playoffs this season.

What is going on with the Jets at tight end? Chris Herndon made one catch for three yards and fumbled in another atrocious this season. The Jets have not had a good tight end since a few good years with Dustin Keller a decade ago. We then get into Sam Darnold’s play, which is not getting any better. Coz thinks the Jets should think about sitting Darnold and his banged up shoulder as his trade value for next season is only going down right now. The Jets biggest fear would be missing out on the top pick, ending up with No. 2  and not getting Trevor Lawrence.

Jets special teams coach from 2001-2012 Mike Westhoff then joins the pod. Westhoff talks about what he’s up to now in retirement after doing media work and then coaching with the Saints. He gets into the two nightmare endings with the Saints on the “Minneapolis Miracle” and the no pass interference call in the NFC Championship against the Rams in 2019. Westhoff says the Jets need an “exterminator” right now and should start from scratch. He thinks Sean Payton would be the right guy to bring in to coach the team if he were to leave New Orleans. Westhoff then gets into some great stories from his days with the Jets, which will be featured in a book he is writing that will come out in 2021 called, “Figure It Out.”

He gets into Mark Sanchez not being good, his rocky relationship with Mike Tannenbaum, Eric Mangini deserving more time, the coaches he learned from, including Don Shula with the Dolphins, and his own memorable press conferences. Westhoff also talks about Brett Favre’s time with the Jets, the winning seasons, the success on punt and kick returns guys like Leon Washington and Brad Smith had here and how the game has changed. He tells the incredible story of Tannenbaum still owing $10,000 to charity for a bet they made. There were tons of great nuggets from this interview.
