Giants report card, Week 1
Grading the Giants’ first game:
QUARTERBACKS B
Better accuracy on the move from Eli Manning (20 of 29, 256, 1 TD, 1 INT) and steady all the way through, but did fumble once and throw one interception.
RUNNING BACKS C+
Tough times for Brandon Jacobs (16-46), who never established much of anything and was bad in short-yardage. Ahmad Bradshaw (12-60) was more effective.
WIDE RECEIVERS B
If he stays healthy, Steve Smith (6-80) will catch 75 passes. He’s Mr. Third Down. Flash of potential from Mario Manningham.
TIGHT ENDS B+
Quietly, Kevin Boss (3-62) was a big fac tor. Got downfield and catches of 11, 24 and 27 yards led to field goals.
OFFENSIVE LINE B+
Kudos to LG Rich Seubert for hanging in vs. 350-pound Albert Haynesworth and also for alertly pouncing on fumble. Overall poor job of run blocking in short yardage.
DEFENSIVE LINE A
What a return for DE Osi Umenyiora with sack and strip of Jason Campbell, finished off with 37-yard fumble return for TD. Jus tin Tuck (1½sacks) back in form.
LINEBACKERS B
Clinton Portis (16-62) ran for 34 yards on his first rushing attempt but then was blan keted, gaining only 28 yards on his next 15 tries. Half a sack for Chase Blackburn.
SECONDARY B+
Why in the world didn’t the ‘Skins test rookie CB Bruce Johnson? That’s their problem. Spectacular interception tip-toe ing sideline by CB Corey Webster.
SPECIAL TEAMS D
Went for block on FG attempt and com pletely fooled when holder Hunter Smith took off on fake for 8-yard TD.
KICKING GAME A
Lawrence Tynes off to good start going 3-for-3 with FGs of 28, 45 and 28 yards. Kickoffs still need work. Jeff Feagles (one punt, 48 yards) enjoyed the scenery.
COACHING B+
New defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan got a modest Gatorade shower after his debut. Kevin Gilbride may have to start throwing it in short yardage if the ground game can’t pound away for the first down.
