Don’t look for the Giants to institute their own rule regarding kneeling as a form of protest to social injustice during the national anthem. They plan to wait until the NFL and NFL Players Association can come to an agreement on the current league-wide rule that has been put on hold, co-owner John Mara said Thursday prior to the team’s first practice of training camp.

“My intention all along was to sit with our veteran players when they came back to training camp and just discuss the issue,” said Mara, the chairman of the NFL Management Council Executive Committee. “Now that the policy has been put on hold heading into discussions with the NFLPA, I think I’m going to let those play out before I sit down and talk about that with our players.”

Co-owner Steve Tisch has said Giants players will not be punished for any national anthem protests, while senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara said, “We want everyone to stand.” Last year, only Olivier Vernon kneeled during the anthem all season. Mara plans to speak with Zak DeOssie, Mark Herzlich and Michael Thomas, who are on the union’s executive council, at some point about the issue.

In May, the NFL passed a new policy for the anthem, mandating all players on the field stand otherwise their teams will be fined. Teams would be allowed to create their own policies to discipline or fine players who don’t stand. Under the rule, players would be allowed to stay in the locker room. But after news leaked of a placeholder Dolphins rule that players who protest could be suspended up to four games, the league announced the new rule was in limbo as a resolution was being worked out between the NFL and NFLPA.

“There will be meetings fairly soon, and we’ll have discussions about the anthem policy,” Mara said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to come to some sort of a resolution.”
