At least he wasn’t Mr. Irrelevant.

Jake Fromm may have fallen far from his projection as a third-round pick, dropping deep into the third day, but the Bills saw what others didn’t, taking the former Georgia star quarterback in the fifth round (167th overall), possibly hoping to groom him as Josh Allen’s backup.

There were questions about the 6-foot-2 Fromm’s lack of arm strength and mobility, but he is a winner, leading Georgia to three straight SEC East crowns and throwing 78 touchdown passes to just 18 interceptions and completing 63.3 percent of his passes in the premier conference in the country over three seasons. In an ironic twist, Fromm was picked after Jacob Eason, who he beat out at Georgia. Eason transferred to Washington and was picked in the fourth round (122nd overall) by the Colts.

Perhaps the Bills have the same philosophy as the Eagles, who stunned most experts by taking Jalen Hurts in the second round. ESPN insider Adam Schefter said during the draft that teams have told him it’s more important to have a quality backup during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“I think teams are looking to sure up the most important position in this sport and that’s why the Eagles [drafted Hurts],” Schefter said.
